Sojourn

In the spring of 2016, a friend and I participated in the “Peruvian Cultural Exchange Volunteer Trip” organized by Lord Byng Middle School. What I saw and heard on this journey is still fresh in my memory.

At a kindergarten in a poor area of Lima, we met a group of special children. The kindergarten, called Beata Matilda Tellez, is located in the red zone of Lima, which was once a place occupied by terrorists in the past few years. Due to limited economic conditions, the buildings are in disrepair and the food can only satisfy their hunger. Most of these children come from poor families, and even worse, they are orphans who have been abandoned for various reasons. They don't have beautiful clothes or brand-new toys, but they have eyes filled with hope and innocent hearts. Seeing their smiling faces strengthened my determination to help them.

In order to let more people know about it and help them, I and several like-minded friends decided to raise funds through a photography exhibition. The "Traveler" photography exhibition was held at Wesbrook Community Center on November 5, 2017. We were selling handmade bookmarks, refrigerator magnets and greeting cards with photos from the film festival on site. All profits has been donated to Beata Matilda Tellez Kindergarten to buy new clothes, improved meals and toys for the children. Those who love others will always be loved.
